CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Sunday afternoon was anything but ordinary for Casey Smith and his son.

"Sitting there watching TV and next thing you know I hear five gunshots," said Casey Smith.

Those gunshots are sounds they aren't used to hearing in their neighborhood on Charleston's West Side.

"Cops, ambulance, everybody started swarming in," recalls Smith.

Little did Smith and his son know, they were caught in the middle of what police are calling a modern day Hatfield/McCoy feud.

"It's not a spree where a large number of criminals are running around shooting," said Lt. S.A. Cooper with the Charleston Police Department. "It's a small group that are having a battle between the two of them."

Police say the two main parties are the Davis' and the Carter's.

Monday, Andre Lee, a relative of the Davis', was shot in the shoulder. Levi Carter was named as a person of interest in that case.

Tuesday, Justin Davis and another person were arrested following a shooting on the West Side, though police still unsure who they were aiming for.

Sunday, Dante Davis and D.J. Carter were both shot in a gun battle, one that ended with Carter in custody. He now faces charges of Malicious Wounding and Wanton Endangerment.

"They have all proven to be dangerous and have all proven to not have any consideration for the safety of the public," said Lt. Cooper.

With each shooting, neighbors grow even more nervous.

"My son cannot even come out and play anymore because he don't know who's going to come by and start shooting," said Smith.

While police won't say their investigation is complete, they do say there's only course of action to stop the bloodshed.

"The way to end this violence is to prosecute all of them," said Lt. Cooper.

That will keep the crossfire in the courts, and off the streets.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two people were shot on Charleston's West Side in what police are calling a family feud.

It happened just after 1:30 Sunday afternoon in the 1300 block of Stuart Street.

Police say two families, the Carters and the Davis', have been fighting. An ongoing feud between the families may be responsible for four different shootings in Charleston within just the past week.

Police say on Sunday, D.J. Carter and Dante Davis were both shot and because of the feud. They don't believe there is a suspect. Police aren't sure who shot who, but they say both men have non-life threatening injuries.

Two people were arrested Sunday around the same time, but police say they aren't connected to the shooting.
