UPDATE 7/30/14 @11:13 p.m.
ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office says it appears that a lit cigarette is what sparked a deadly fire at a home in St. Albans.

The fire started about 2 p.m. at a home on Benedict Circle.

Investigators say it only took crews three minutes to get to the scene. By that time, the house was already up in flames.

Two people in the home died in the fire.

Neighbors tell WSAZ.com the two who died were a man and a woman in their 50s or 60s. They say they were not married, just good friends.

A neighbor said he heard a woman screaming and rushed to help her. The door was jammed, so he kicked it in, but couldn't pull her out in time.

"The only thing that I could think of was grab her as hard as I can and pull her and then it didn't work. There was no grip left on her to be able to pull her out of the house and then the heat was just unbearable," Chris Clark told WSAZ.com.

Clark went on to say, "The flames -- in a matter of 20 seconds from the time of me kicking the door in and seeing her legs to pull her out -- I seen the flames in the living room, and they were at the door in less than 20 seconds."

Another neighbor said the pair would walk around the neighborhood and were very friendly.

"He considered me more or less his brother cause he has no family. You know, and I considered him my brother, too," said Darrell Stephenson.

The names of the victims have not been released. Investigators tell WSAZ.com they are notifying the next of kin.
