UPDATE 10/4/12 @ 10 p.m.
FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- It was a close call for a woman and her nephew when their ATV suddenly stalled at a very inconvenient spot.

The incident began as the two were riding on a gravel road next to the train tracks Wednesday night in Auxier, Kentucky.

"Wrong spot, wrong time I guess you might say," Floyd County Sheriff’s Deputy Ralph Frasure said.

The ride took a highly suspenseful turn when the woman tried to cross the tracks in front of an oncoming train, and the four-wheeler stalled.

"She was attempting to get it off the crossing and got it hung on the left wheel," Frasure said.

The 12-year-old heard a train whistle and turned and saw the train coming at them. He was able to jump off the ATV just seconds before impact, Frasure said.

"The boy was scared,” Frasure said. “He was really nervous.”

He says the woman, Vanessa Butcher, was still on the ATV when the train smashed into it, injuring her left leg and arm.

The train, going nearly 30 miles-per-hour, put on its emergency brake but wasn't able to stop for another couple hundred feet.

Butcher was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Thursday evening.

The boy was treated and released from Highlands Regional Medical Center Wednesday night.
