ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Recycling is something that takes time and effort.
“Everything goes to recycle,” St. Albans resident Randy Westfall says. “The cans and the plastic. And I separate them all so they can get them.”
That's why when we got this video from an anonymous viewer, upset that he was watching the St. Albans garbage truck toss his recyclables in with the trash, we wanted to investigate.
Westfall says he's seen the same thing happen in front of his house.
“I've seen them take it right out of there and throw it into the garbage,” Westfall said.
But the mayor of St. Albans says that's all part of the process. He says the village is recycling, but it can't take everything... Including things like glass and plastic.
“They sort those out,” Mayor Calloway said. “Some of that is done curbside, some of it is then thrown in the garbage if it doesn't meet the regulations when it comes to recycling.”
We showed the video to Mayor Calloway. He said that's likely what happened here, but he can't be sure.
“If there is a question on that, I can't answer that,” Calloway said. “I wasn't there. That's why if he has a problem, he needs to talk to our director and say so and so did such and such.”
For Randy Westfall, the whole thing is about doing what's right.
“It's important to me because it's the future,” Westfall said. “Even my kids, you know. That's less dump. That's less stuff in the garbage dumps that can be recycled and repurposed for something else.”
He’s just hoping his effort is not wasted.
