W.Va. Board of Education Emergency Alert System Helps Parents Navigate School Closings
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Parents in West Virginia have a tool at their disposal to keep them up to date on school closings and severe weather conditions.
The alert system uses computer technology and social media to get parents information as soon as possible.
"That's why we wanted to add all of this technology that will help them," said Liza Cordiero with the West Virginia Board of Education. "Text messages, especially. They can log onto our website and say, 'Yes, I want to give you my cell phone number' so, if there is a closing for a particular county or a particular school they get that instantaneously."
Logging on is as simple as getting to the state Board of Education's website. You'll see the severe weather icon, in the form of a snowman, off on the left hand side.
Cordiero says it's an easy set up. Keep in mind, though, it's up to individual counties to get that information up to date.
"It's up the individual school systems to go to the website, log in and upload their information," Cordiero said. "We've built it so, as soon as it's posted, then it automatically goes to a subscriber."
