Water Levels Low in Pratt, Town Asked to Conserve Water

PRATT, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The mayor of Pratt is asking people in the area to conserve water because the town's water levels are low.

Mayor Gary Fields tells WSAZ.com anytime the Kanawha River rises to its current level the town can't pump water because of all of the debris that clogs up the intake pump.

Right now, West Virginia American Water is moving a portable pump to allow the town to pump more water. However, the mayor says the portable pump doesn't pump as fast as the regular system.

Mayor Fields has also issued a precautionary boil water advisory in the Pratt area until they are able to get more water in the storage tanks.

West Virginia American Water has also issued a precautionary boil water advisory for Paint Creek Road in Kanawha County. That affects 275 customers.

According to a news release, the advisory is in effect for its customers in the Upper Kanawha Valley district because their water comes from the town of Pratt's system.

Affected customers should boil their water before consumption until further notice.

West Virginia American Water also recommends the following steps:

Throw away beverages and ice cubes if made with tap water;

Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;

Provide pets with boiled water after cooling;

Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;

Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.
