KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- About a dozen homes along Springfork Drive have no water, and these homeowners are looking for help.

Brenda Dearien has lived on Springfork Drive for 18 years. But her water woes are making her second guess her decision.

"We even put a for sale sign up at one point because we were so frustrated with it," she said.

Dearien said ever since area mines did blasting years ago, her well water is bad.

"We've had people test it and say it wasn't worth drinking. We have to buy from Tyler Mountain," she said. "More or less, you have to clean the residue everyday. My clothes turn orange. My hair turns orange."

Dearien spends about $50 a month shipping water in, but that's not the only cost she's encountering.

"We got a new water softener, we had are pump, we had all this stuff pulled out of the well, and it was over $2,500 that we put into it to see if we could get it, and nothing resulted out of it."

But WSAZ.com learned that getting water in this area will be a problem. Kanawha County leaders said West Virginia American Water is a private company, and because the Public Service Commission wouldn't allow them to increase their water rates, they're not doing any new projects at this time.

"I think there was a commercial for West Virginia American Water not too long ago," Dearien said. "They want to see everyone in West Virginia with water. I mean, here we are in Kanawha County and have nothing."

Now she's left with water that not only ruins her appliances but isn't drinkable.

According to Kanawha County leaders, nine county groups across the state filed a complaint against the water company, including Kanawha County. The company requested a settlement conference at the end of the month.

If no agreement is met there, a hearing in front of the PSC will happen in May.
