UPDATE 6/5/14 @ 6 p.m.
WAYNE, W.Va. (WSAZ) --The man charged with the murder of his step-grandmother has been ordered held in a state mental faculty until his next court appearance.
Kevin Christenson, 22, of Wayne is charged with first degree murder in the death of Ruth Adkins, 59, of Dunlow.
Adkins died Wednesday night at a Huntington hospital. Christenson was arrested Thursday morning.
Troopers say Mrs. Adkins was with her step-grandson Wednesday at a mental health treatment center when -- for some reason -- he became enraged and started hitting her in the head.
Later that evening, Adkins said she felt sick and was having trouble breathing. An ambulance took her to hospital where she died a short time later.
Christenson was arraigned on the murder charge Thursday morning
An emergency competency hearing has also held where the judge decided to send Christenson to the William Sharpe Hospital in Weston for evaluation.
Following the hearing, the victim's daughter told WSAZ.com that the system failed to protect her family
Betty Clark said her mom had tried since May 13th to get a mental hygiene warrant on Kevin.
“They took him off all the medication. You can't do that. I don't blame the court. I blame the doctors. You can't put someone on that kind of medication and take them off," said Clark.
Clark also said she was scared to death of Kevin.
"He has hit me in the head. He took his fingers and tried to pop my eyeballs out, so I had son with me when I watched him, I wasn't going to take any chances." And I think the doctors ought to be accountable for it. He can't function in a prison or whatever. Even in the state hospital, what are they going to do, dope him up.” Clark.
Clark says her mom had been caring for Christenson since he was six.
There is no word on when Christenson will be back in court.
Wayne County Prosecutor Tom Plymale says Kevin Christenson, 22, of Wayne was taken into custody Thursday after W.Va. State Police issued a warrant for his arrest.
The charge is in connection with the death of 58-year-old Ruth Adkins of Dunlow on Wednesday.
Plymale tells WSAZ.com that Adkins died several hours after allegedly being assaulted by Christenson at a mental health treatment center in Wayne.
Plymale says a hearing for Christenson is set for Thursday afternoon.
