CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The West Virginia Senate has approved legislation to protect breastfeeding in public places.

The Senate approved the measure Saturday and sent it to the House, which must approve Senate changes. Senator Clark Barnes cast the lone vote against the bill.

Sen. Chris Walters said West Virginia is one of few states that don't have breast-feeding protections on the books. The bill states that breastfeeding offers emotional and physical benefits for children. Walter said the bill will encourage all mothers in the state to breastfeed, which he said has many health benefits.

An earlier amendment stating that breastfeeding women must be discreet was removed.
