HUNTINGTON, W.Va. WSAZ) -- Police say a 24-year-old woman was attacked and beaten outside her apartment in Huntington Wednesday night.
The attack happened in the 1300-block of 15th Street about 7 p.m.
Huntington Police say the woman, a medical student, was walking home from the Erma Byrd Clinical Center near 15th Street when she was attacked from behind, beaten in the face and head, and then robbed. They say she is in the hospital, but remembers nothing about the attack.
According to the police report, a witness told officers he heard a woman screaming. When he walked outside he saw a struggle between the victim and her alleged attacker.
The witness says after the attacker took off, the woman staggered onto to her front porch about one half-block away and collapsed. The suspect was last seen running down 15th Street toward 13th Avenue.
Police say they have no description of the suspect, but believe it was a random attack.
"We haven't had any problems in the area, it's a relatively quiet area of town. We'll do the best we can to find out who did this and bring them to justice," said Huntington Police Lt. John Williams
The attacker did take the woman’s cell phone.
Williams says investigators are looking at places close by that may have surveillance footage.
If you have any information that may lead to an arrest, you are asked to call the Huntington Police Department.
The police report indicates that the Marshall University Police Department is aware of the attack since the victim is a medical student.
