Free Mulch in Kanawha County Made of Recycled Glass
Solid Waste Authority Gives Away Tons A Month Glass is crushed and stripped of labels before heavy machinery sands it down into mulch. Posted: 6:34 PM Jun 4, 2008Reporter: Bill Murray Email Address: bill.murray@wsaz.com |

Every 10 days, Angela Rexroad makes a road trip to the local recycling plant. Sure, it's 15 minutes each way and gas prices are high, but Angela says it's worth every penny. "We know we've got to do something or we're not going to have an environment left and the animals are going to be all extinct."
Norm Steenstra runs Kanawha County's Solid Waste Authority.
Recycling glass bottles isn't cost effective, they're heavy and the margin of error is great. "OIne bottle of amber glass can contaminate an entire container of clear," Steentra says, "We're doing about 10-12 tons of it a month that is not going into a landfill. That's about $700 different municipalities aren't paying to dump it in."
The recycled glass mulch can be used for art projects, countertops, drainage and mulch.
If you're interested in free mulch, contact the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority. The Recycling Center is located at 600 Slack St., Charleston, WV 25301. The phone number is (304)342-4477
