OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Marvin Gearhart and his team have been volunteering their time to deliver hot meals to people in Olive Hill, Kentucky, for the last year and a half.
The program began with a limited budget and is now thriving in part due to Gearhart's efforts.
Gearhart was named president of the meals on wheels program.
"Being the type of guy that he is, he just took the bull by the horn and went right out and in no time we had enough money to pay off our five hundred dollars and keep our meals on wheels program going."
The program doesn't always get food for free. Meals on wheels relies on state and federal subsidies and private vendors -- and plenty of volunteers.
Gearhart has even gotten his family involved with the program, too. His daughter, Mira, is the secretary.
"When dad became president of meals on wheels he originally started could you type this letter for me and then from there it kind of snowballed and I ended up becoming the secretary," said Mira.
The people involved with meals on wheels say they are very appreciative for everything that Gearhart has done, and that's why they nominated him for a WSAZ Hometown Hero Award.
"I appreciate it," said Gearheart. "But, if it weren't these guys, there would be no meals on wheels, and I just appreciate you putting up with me."
