MINGO COUNTY, W.Va (WSAZ) - This week's Hometown Hero is a teacher in Mingo County but many of her students think more of her as a second mother.

Her classroom looks like the beach, but in this case, students at Burch High School would like to be right inside Sharon Collins art class.

She's not just a teacher she's a mother, a mother experiencing grief beyond words. Her son Richard died in a car accident last June.

Collins said, "I breathed in- and my son breathed out that is how close we were. this has been very difficult and if i didn't have God to send me all of these children with a hug my days would be really dark.

Collins has been buying prom dresses for girls that couldn't afford them and making sure that every senior has their picture taken.

Of all the teacher's in this world, Mrs. Collins deserved the hometown hero award. She is a great teacher and a big inspiration to all the kids at Burch High. Teacher's like her is what makes me miss high school. She is a very strong person, especially knowing what she has gone through. Mrs. Collins, I wish you all the best and I love you very much.

i met her for the first time when she was my son james' teacher in high school, james was going through a stage where he didnt want to finsh out his sr year, and no matter what i said or did he seemed to let it go through one ear and out the other, but mrs collins came to my home, and she insured me that i had nothing to worry about that, and ill never forget the expression on my sons face when he seen his teacher setting in my living room, and she looked at me and said, dont worry about james, he is gonna graduate. and he did, i want to say thank you to her for helping me inspire james into knowing that we love and belive in him, and i want to express my sympathy to her and her family, on the loss of her son richard, your in my prayers!
