CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For thousands of families across the region, Little League is a way of life.

For more than 50 years, one man has been dedicated to the kids and it's all for the love of the game.

This week’s Hometown Hero who created a field of dreams for generations to come.

If life lessons are learned on the baseball diamond generations of little leaguers in Charleston were taught by the best.

"He was always calm, cool-mannered" player agent Shannon Hudnall said.

"He was good to everybody and he never did say like nothing negative, he was always positive about everything," Little League player Hunter Lowery said.

Cleon Ferrell scored a homerun when he created a field of dreams in Campbell’s Creek. It’s a place to play baseball that now bears his name.

"You're talking an everyday fixture up here, everybody knows Cleon," new Little League President Bobby Manley said.

He started the Northeast Little League, served as president and spent more than 50 years there sharing the basics and beyond.

"If you see them doing something wrong then you correct them. That's the way you do it, talk to them and correct them," Cleon said.

Clearly, Cleon likes to keep it simple, but players past and present say words can never express how much he means to them and this place.

"He is such a pillar in the community he has worked so hard to get the league started and it's been successful for many, many years and it's just a great place to be," player agent Shannon Hudnall said.

After all those years, Cleon's retired his president's hat and just wants to sit back and enjoy a good game.

"I'll probably live until I'm 100. I'm just 82 now, so lots of time," Cleon said.

For all the time he's given to Little League baseball, it’s a huge thank you and a special honor.

This hero's only wish is that his legacy lives on through each pitch of the ball and every swing of the bat.

"I hope they get a good life out of it," Cleon said.

It’s a hope that lands Cleon Ferrell in a league of his own.
