CROSS LANES, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One look shows no ordinary baseball game took place in Charleston recently.
The special needs children are members of the Challenger Baseball League. They waited for hours during a doubleheader for their chance to play at Appalachian Power Park with some real life ballplayers.
The game with the West Virginia Power in May was a rare treat.
But twice a week in the spring, kids in the Challenger League in Cross Lanes have every bit as much fun rounding the bases at their home field.
They get that chance, thanks in large part to the dedication of one man -- Stan Hager.
"I've mowed my share of the grass over the years," Stan Hager said.
"It's not just you show up at the field and it's done. He comes two hours before, if it's been rainy, makes sure it's smooth for chairs," Mary Hager said.
Mary is every bit as involved. The two of them launched this team twenty years ago, not because they have a child who could benefit, but because they heard about the league and wanted to give these kids the chance to hit one out of the park.
Stan doesn't enjoy getting the attention himself. He prefers that go to the kids. He'd rather go about his work, fixing up the field and giving these kids the priceless experience playing America's pasttime -- all under the quiet eye of the Hometown Hero.
