HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Sometimes in life, we just need a bright spot to help give us a lift.

That's especially true for people in the hospital. Skye Taylor, our latest WSAZ.com Hometown Hero, is helping spread smiles throughout Cabell Huntington Hospital.

It all started a couple of years ago when Skye was trying to think of a project to earn her Girl Scout golden award. She wouldn't settle with just anything -- she wanted to make the biggest difference she could in her community.

In a little less than a year and more than 500 painted ceiling tiles later, the pediatric unit at Cabell Huntington Hospital looks like a beautiful rainbow.

Skye's proud parents thought it was an ambitious undertaking, but they knew if anyone could do it she could.

I don't know Skye personally, but she has sold GS cookies at my office buildings (Coal Exchange and River Tower) for approximately 10 years. I was immediately impressed by her committment, drive, and professionalism. And this was when she was 5 or 6!! As she got older, everyone in our office looked forward to her arrival each Spring. I cannot say that I am surprised she received this award, but she deserves it. Congratulations, Skye and thanks for all those years of cookies.

The award Skye earned is actually the Girl Scout Gold Award. It is THE highest award in Girl Scouting and comparable to the eagle scout award for boys. The requirements for earning the Gold Award are quite intense and involve a girl identifying a need in her community, creating a plan, proposing her plan to a committee, logging many hours in a leadership role, logging more hours in career exploration, taking action to carry out her plan from start to finish to meet the need, documenting and reporting everything, and more.
