HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The pain of losing a newborn child is indescribable.

Two parents who have felt that pain also feel something else -- gratefulness.

Our latest WSAZ Hometown Hero story is about a young girl and how she brought together a set of strangers for the rest of their lives.

Charlee Gundy and her husband lost their daughter, Marlee, who was born premature at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Charlee Gundy recently reunited with neonatal intensive care nurses Ellen Darnell and Keri McClean, both of whom helped care for Marlee.

Behind the tears of the Gundy family is heartfelt sincerity.

Marlee died the week after being diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), which proves fatal for many premature babies.

But Keri's and Ellen's job didn't end there. The nurses made a mold of Marlee's feet and put together a "memory box." They do that for every baby who doesn't make it out of the hospital.

Ellen and some other nurses even went to Marlee's funeral.

Marlee's legacy lives on in many ways. Charlee was inspired to go back to school after her daughter died.

Shelly, I know this family and her husband has a really good job. They don't recieve welfare, and I believe that as long as they can feed them, they can have them. So try appreciating the story for what it's really about. After all, if you can't say anything nice, maybe you shouldn't say anything at all.We love you Charlee and Chad!

I think all the NIC nurses are angels. Our grandbabies were premature also. 21/2 lbs. each. If it weren't for the nurses and their dedication and care they probably wouldn't have made it. Now they are almost 5 and doing great. My prayers are with any family with premature babies and with the nurses who care for them.

God bless nurses like these. God puts special people in these jobs.I pray that God gives this young family comfort, and prayers for a healthy new baby.
