HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Surveillance video cameras are all around us- recording our every move in banks, stores and even in taxicabs.

Locally, several cabbie attacks have been caught on tape- an instrumental tool in solving the crime.

Jamie Marlowe who owns the Yellow Cab Company in Huntington says every cab is equipped with a surveillance camera that shoots inside the entire cab and outside of it.

“Our whole system begins around driver safety,” said Marlowe.

Case in point, the video we aired earlier this week of a cab driver who was attacked and robbed at gunpoint by five men.

Views both inside and outside the cab gave police and the public a good look at the suspects.

“If you leave my driver alone, I don't care what you do and you and I have videos we sit and laugh at,” said Marlowe.

Marlowe showed us some of the videos in the Cab Camera Archives.

They range from the good, the bad and the downright bizarre, and while there is plenty of entertainment there are videos that are not funny at all, they are not a crime either.

“You'd be surprised how many people will stick their kids in the cab and send them off, we see kids in diapers and we take them from point A to point B,” said Marlowe.

And still others are used as training videos.

Accident re-constructionists use cab-crash video regularly for valuable information.

The surveillance camera in Melvin Byrd’s cab is why he has continued to drive a cab for nearly twenty years.

“It makes me feel a whole lot safer. The first thing passengers ask, is that camera on? It's always on. Does it have voice, I say yeah. They sit back there and are quiet,” said Byrd.

Marlowe has more than 80,000 videos archived.

The company is hailed as one of the most technologically advanced in the country.

They also have a website with plenty of other videos for your viewing pleasure.

I love the camera in the cab for driver and passenger safety. But I'm a little curious...aren't you worried about getting sued by the people you were making fun of in this story? See, the cab company can show that video if a crime has taken place, but for you to air the other footage, you need signed consent from passengers. People have sued and won in cases like this due to a reasonable expectation of privacy since the footage on the tapes is to be used for crime prevention and safety reasons and not for entertainment purposes...which is clearly how you used some of the footage.
