HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It didn't take long for Bill Coffey to realize retirement wasn't for him.

The 67-year-old says chuckling, "It's kinda boring to sit. I love the wife to death. She was glad I got out also. It's been a great opportunity for us."

Mr. Coffey has a new job through the Mature Worker Program
coordinated, locally, through the Southwestern Community Action Council.

Alissa Stewart is the director of the program.

"I don't know a lot of people who can get paid to look for a job, but once we've located a position for them and the employer, we can offer the employer a financial incentive to hire them," Alissa Stewart said.

Mr Coffey says it's given him a second chance at 67.

"There's a lot of people, especially this day and time, with the economy being in the situation it's in right now. It's a great tool. I can recommend it to anyone," Coffey said.

If you're over 55 and looking for work, call (304) 525-5151.
That office will have information about what you need to know to qualify.

I am 56 years old, worked since I was 14. I was laid off last July (my job was sent to the Philippines). When I went to unemployment office to file a new claim, I talked with the people in this program and was told "there is nothing out there at all". For all of those claiming discrimination, it is 4 times as hard to find a job at 55 and over than it is at any other age (statistics prove this). Employers don't want to hire 55 workers because it costs more in insurance, that's the main reason they don't hire in this age group. They are also afraid because of the experience we have, we will ask for more money. Bottom line is--there are no jobs in this area that pay any kind of decent wage!!

THIS program IS AGE DISCRIMINATION! It is amazing that AARP considers you Mature at the age of 50. (You get a plastic card to prove it too!) I too have been out of and CAN NOT find a decent wage job (also Marshall educated-actually in the Adult Education Field) AND I AM DEPENDABLE! Don't ever put a label on someone you do not know! Debbie--I take you you have a job and don't have to worry about putting food in your stomach or enough money to get your medicine!

That is discrimination if I have ever seen it
