HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Governor Joe Manchin has signed into law a measure that can help secure the future of children with autism.

Gov. Manchin signed the bill in a ceremony at Marshall University which is home to to the West Virginia Autism Training Center.

The measure gives families of children with autism spectrum disorders
a tax deduction for contributions to a trust fund that may be used when the kids become adults.

According to the State Tax Department, it's a maximum deduction of
$2,000 and it's effective 2011

West Virginia is the first state in the nation to have this type of law.

The number of West Virginia children diagnosed with autism grew from about 100 in 1994 to about 500 in 2003.

My son is autistic and I can't believe how little there is out there for parents. When my son was diagnosed I thought finally some help, and then there was nothing. You do not get help at all!

THANK YOU,THANK YOU. I have a son with autism and receive nothing..NO waiver 19,NO SSI, so this will be help in the future. But it would be nice to have help now with all the expences that insurances dont cover. There are vitamins that help with autism but insurance dont cover it. And trying to keep transpertation to all of the appointments thats a nessasary can be difficult. But all in all this bill is a step in the right direction.

This bill is a wonderful thing. Of course it won't be magic, but it's a step in the direction of helping families who deal with autism each day. If you do not have to deal with autism, how lucky are you. Thank God our state has stepped up to the challenge! Way to go Joe!
