HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Why risk spending eight bucks to go see a movie you may or may not like when you can see a classic movie for less?

That's a question a lot of people are considering now that the Cinema Theater in Huntington is reaching deep into the vault to bring some older films back to the big screen.

The theater has started Flashback Mondays; every Monday night they show a classic film at five dollars a ticket.

So far the idea has been a smash.

"We really like that they're doing this, so we've been here fairly regularly for the past three, four weeks,” Richard Mullins said. “We've already mapped out which ones we're going to come to the next three months."

“I think this is wonderful,” Richard Newman said. “I compliment the management here for doing this kind of thing. I've noticed almost every week I've been here the theater's been pretty well packed."

Kenny Riffe drove all the way from Greenup County to see the iconic John Belushi wash seven years of college down the drain on the big screen for the theater’s screening of “National Lampoon’s Animal House.”

"I'm a big fan of his work on “Saturday Night Live,” and getting to watch “Animal House” and see how well he performs and how funny he was and the stuff he was always thinking of, that was big. It really helps to spiral you on the journey to knowing who John Belushi was. Makes me sad that a speedball took him down."

Whether folks are seeing these movies for the first time or were in attendance when they were first released, they agree there's something special about seeing a movie in a theater.

"It's a completely different atmosphere sitting in an auditorium with a lot of other people around you,” Cinema Theater manager Brian Cade said. “The big screen, surround sound, it’s a little different than sitting on your couch at home watching on your TV by yourself."

Some movies coming up the next few weeks include “The Godfather,” “Citizen Kane,” and “Ghostbusters 2.”

They'll be showing the Alfred Hitchcock thriller “North by Northwest” Feb. 8.

It could use a facelift but it reminds me of when I was young and went to the movies, flashback indeed!

Sure, the theater may not be the most up-to-date, but I personally think that it only adds to the nostalgic quality of the movies. This film series was an excellent idea, and I applaud the theater for taking this move.
