HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's time to dust off the dancing shoes and buff the linoleum when the V-Club and Java Joint join forces Friday, April 16th for the 2010 Tree Huggers Ball.

The fun starts at 6:00 p.m. Friday at the Java Joint in Huntington with live music, an art exhibit, door prizes a silent auction and raffle. Family Conspiracy, Jess Graham and Karen Scalf are all scheduled to perform.

Marshall's Student Environmental Action Coalition will host the event. There is no cover charge.

At 9:00 p.m. the V-Club will take over and host the 18th Annual Tree Huggers Ball.

Singer-songwriter Tracy Ann Stanley will open up the evening followed by Appalachian-Americana artist Reagan Boggs from Wise, Virginia who has appeared on Mountain Stage.

Jamaican born Ras Shayar, now living in Beckley, closes out the evening with his Rasta mountain music. He's played with the likes of reggae monster bands Krooshal Force and Burning Spear.

Event organizers at the V-Club are asking for a $10 donation from the general public, and $5 from Marshall Students. All proceeds go to help the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition.

Why cant you folks work together. Mining is providing jobs and benefits to all of us in this area. Also the "tree huggers" keeping the coal operators in check with safety concerns over the enviroment. As a neutral to all of your concerns, I see both sides of your concerns beneficial to this area.

This is an event to which all who have an appreciation for the wondrous world we inhabit together are welcome. Marshall students and many long-time residents of West Virginia have worked hard to provide this very positive community event. This is NOT an event that is anti-mining; in fact, many who will be there are highly supportive of the Big Branch miners' families, and others who work in the Coal industry. This event will, however, raise awareness about the need for more effective regulation of ALL industry - for the health and safety of all workers and nearby residents, and also for those of us who live downstream. We all need to admit that it is our broken regulatory systems which are at the heart of many of our current state and national problems. The event will also focus on personal responsibility issues, like recycling. Again, all who have an appreciation of this beautiful world we all inhabit together are welcome.

Not all tree huggers are out to close the mines or are they a bunch of free loaders. Educate yourself a little bit before you go making comments that make you look uneducated and close minded.
