I don’t have to make you aware of the high price you now have to pay out for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Most of the rise in price is due to energy costs especially getting the product to the market. Let’s not forget that the cost of fertilizer to raise those veggies has also taken a tremendous jump. The large commercial farmers have to pass the cost on to someone and you are the likely candidate.

There is light at the end of the tunnel especially when you patronize the many farmers markets in the tri-state. Here are just a few advantages of spending your money with local farmers. The product is fresh. Usually the price is cheaper at farmer’s markets. You know who raised your food. You can establish a good relationship between grower and consumer. You can find out if your fruits and vegetables have been grown organic with no chemicals. Finally, you are supporting the local economy. You will likely find more farmers selling at the farmers markets in your area due to the economy this year.

On the other side, certainly there will be more customers as they try to cut food and transportation costs. Don’t forget that in West Virginia, again this year senior citizen food vouchers will be available. Make sure you talk to your local senior center where they will be given out. For the location of a farmers market in your area, contact your County Extension Office.
