I'm sure you have heard the old saying "Apple Pie and Chevrolet" indicating something very American.

However, we need to edit the phrase and make it "Apple Pie, Chevrolet and County fair."

Certainly, if there is something out there that exemplifies Americana it has to be the local County Fair. Where can you go to get a taste literally of agriculture, the base of our national economy during its existence for nearly 250 years. The county fair is a showcase of agriculture in the region. It can give you an idea of the extent of the agriculture industry in your area, not to mention being an education tool for many especially youth. In order to appreciate agriculture today as it supplies us with food and fiber, county fairs can give an appreciation as to what it takes to put food on your table. There isn't anything better to help us appreciate the things we eat and wear than rubbing up against farmers and future farmers at the fair that put those goods into our home.

As I mentioned, let us not forget the great experience the fairs creates in giving our youth the opportunity to learn in an educational setting. Here they can showcase their agriculture accomplishments and who knows, that boy or girl leading that pig in the show ring might be an future farmer. County Fairs offer something for everybody whether you are a farmer looking for new ideas, children looking to have a great time, an opportunity to partake of great food or maybe great music concerts. Who knows, you can probably find an antique Chevrolet on display and by visiting the many food booths, you just might find that piece of home made apple pie. County fairs, apple pie and Chevrolet, they all go together in America today.
