Kathy from Hurricane asks...
Where can you get some gooseberry? Plants or fruits?

John Marra:
"Companies supplying gooseberries will not ship to West Virginia. However, certain counties are allowed to grow gooseberries -- Putnam and Cabell being two of them. Best thing to do is to have a friend out of state order gooseberries for you and then bring them in to your county."

I had landscaping done with hardwood mulch all over the yard. I heard on the Today show the mulch will leech something from the soil unless you have fertilizer. What do I need?

John Marra:
"In use of hardwood mulch, it would be recommended to apply a general use fertilizer at the rate of one pound per 100 square feet. Water in."

Melvia from Wayne asks...
What do you think about a topsy turvy plant? I have one with tomatoes in it. So far they are doing well, but how well will they do with tomatoes on them?

John Marra:
"Topsy turvy plants are a novelty. My opinion is they don't give you the quality tomatoes because most of the time people hang them up in trees. Tomatoes need full sun. If you want tomatoes, plant them in the ground. Use the topsy turvy plant for a novelty."

I have a door peach tree. I want to know what to do with the small peaches that fall off?

John Marra:
"You need to spray your peach tree with a backyard orchard spray one time every two weeks. That will prevent the peaches from falling off. Disregard the peaches that have fallen off."

I am from South America. My grandmother had a plant called a porcelain flower. The flower is exactly as if it was made out of porcelain. At the bottom, it was darker pink. On the top, it was lighter pink. Where could I get that plant?

John Marra:
"Contact your larger greenhouse growers or nurseries where you live. They should be able to order one but it sounds like it can only be a houseplant."

Max from Greenup County asks...
I am having trouble with squirrels under the roof? How do I get rid of them?

John Marra:
"There isn't any means of controlling squirrels other than physically barring them from getting into that entrance. There are no repellents that I know of to use for that purpose. Use of wire is your best bet."

Don asks...
I have the American red cedar tree. It’s about 30-40 years old. There has been a water leak for a couple years. Looks like it’s rotting. People tell me water will not rot the tree. They say it’s a cedar apple rust. What does that mean?

John Marra:
"Cedar apple rust will not detrimentally affect the red cedar -- only apple trees."

---
I have a question about my grape vine. I happen to notice those Japanese beetles. We sprayed it with ortho. Now the leaves are brown. Did I kill it or is there something I can do about it?

John Marra:
"I am not sure what insecticide you sprayed with. Overspraying with an insecticide can easily turn the leaves brown. Make sure you read and follow all label directions."

Betty from Minford asks...
Two of our apple trees – the leaves look like they turned tan. They’re full of apples. Should I spray? Is it too late to spray?

John Marra:
"It's not too late to spray. However, you should have started teh spray schedule as the leaves first started to develop on the tree. Use backyard orchard spray now and every two weeks until the leaves fall off the tree in the Fall."
