Fayetteville, W.Va. – A new McDonald’s opened in Fayetteville Thursday, July 23. Local owner/operators, Ed and Penny Kiliany, and their Director of Operations, son Chris, took measures to ensure the interior of the new store embraces green business initiatives, as well as provides a healthy workplace and community gathering spot.

The Kilianys hired Charter House Innovations to design the interior of the restaurant. The company’s “Leadership Energy Environmental Design” (LEED) accredited professionals incorporate sustainable materials and environmentally responsible practices into their products, processes and designs.

“We are lucky to be in one of the most beautiful locations in West Virginia, the New River Gorge area, and are proud to be a part of a progressive community like Fayetteville, whose citizens embrace the global ‘Go Green’ initiative. The new restaurant reflects our appreciation of the beauty outside our door, as well as our desire to conserve energy and natural resources,” Penny Kiliany said.

Measures that have been taken throughout the restaurant to preserve natural resources include:

• Booths and tables are made with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood products, which limits harm caused to our land, water, and air when extracting wood products from the forest.
• Bamboo, used in the Skyline booths, is considered a renewable material that decreases the amount of natural resources consumed.
• All laminates and solid surfaces are Greenguard Certified to meet indoor air quality standards.
• Polyurethanes were used for the soft seating, which is much healthier for individuals and the environment than the poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) found in typical vinyl upholstery.
• Light-emitting diode (LED) illuminated signs were used on the exterior of the building to conserve energy.
• The store operates under an energy management system to be more energy efficient.
The first 100 customers to enter the store received a coupon for a free Big Mac each week for a year. Local students home from college for the summer camped out at the restaurant all night to be the first in line.
