HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Marshall football sources confirmed Sunday former Marshall football player Johnathan Goddard died in Florida following a motorcycle accident.

Goddard was 27 years old. He had two children, daughter Baylee and son John Jr.

The All-American led the nation in 2005 with 16 sacks and 28.5 tackles for a loss. As a four-year letterman, he started 32 games. He was the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year as a senior.

The defensive end was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2006.

From The Associated Press:

JACKSONVILLE, W.Va. (AP) - The Florida Highway Patrol says former Marshall football standout Johnathan Goddard has died in a motorcycle accident in northern Florida.

Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper says Goddard's motorcycle went off the shoulder of a road at a high rate of speed and overturned about 7:40 p.m. Saturday in Clay County, Fla. A nursing supervisor at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center says Goddard, who was a resident of Starke, Fla., was pronounced dead about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Goddard was the Mid-American Conference defensive player of the year in 2004, when he led the nation with 16 sacks and 28 tackles for loss.

Goddard was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL draft. He later played briefly for the Indianapolis Colts and the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush.

From Marshall University Athletics:

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (MARSHALL SID) - The Marshall University Athletic Department has learned that former Marshall University football All-American Johnathan Goodard passed away from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Saturday evening in Clay County, Florida.

"This is a terrible loss for our football family and our thoughts and prayers are with the Goddard family," Marshall University Head Football Coach Mark Snyder said.

Goddard ranks among the top players in Marshall University football history. He earned first-team All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America, CBS Sports and College Football News and earned second-team accolades from Walter Camp and the Associated Press following a spectacular senior season in 2004. Goddard led the nation with 16 sacks and 28 tackles for loss en route to being named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He also became the first finalist for the coveted Bronko Nagurski Trophy from a non-BCS automatic qualifiying conference following that season. The Nagurski is presented annually by the Charlotte Touchdown Club to the top defensive player in all of college football.

Goddard, 27, was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2005 and spent time with the Indianapolis Colts following his collegiate career. He most recently spent a short stint with the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush.

NEW INFORMATION FROM MARSHALL UNIVERSITY SPORTS INFORMATION:

Huntington, W.Va. (MARSHALL SID) - The independent on-line forums supporting Marshall University, the Huntington community, and friends of the Johnathan Goddard Family have established a trust fund to help the Goddard's offset funeral expenses. Unfortunately Johnathan had no type of insurance and Marshall fans are stepping up to help.

Mark Campbell, a long-time Marshall fan, is spearheading the effort to cover the $13,000 funeral costs. So far, Marshall fans from across the country have responded with donations via the internet of more than $2,500.

Donations should be sent to:

The Johnathan Goddard
Bereavement Fund
C/o Chase Bank
1000 5th Avenue
Huntington, WV 25701

Paypal donations: goddardbereavementfund@suddenlink.net

Contributions in excess of funeral expenses will be donated to the Big Green Scholarship Foundation in the name of Johnathan Goddard.

Goddard was an All-American Defensive End at Marshall in 2004 who earned Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors en route to being named a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy which is presented annually by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. He led the nation that year with 16 sacks and 28 tackles for loss.

Enough already! Let the man rest in peace. If the guy was so great, stop this ignorant bickering (and bad grammar). I am sure he would disapprove of the squabbling, name calling, and bad poetry (plagiarism; sounded like a song I once knew). Respect the dead.

Johnathan and his parents were good to me and my family. His parents were our friends. If you don't agree with what we're doing, don't donate but please, show some respect for the young man's family.

There is a neat place to sign the guest book for jons parents http://www.legacy.com/TimesUnion/DeathNotices.asp? Then click on his name. Also I think it would be great if someone would organize a candle light or a memorial service here for Jon because so many people cant go to Florida but we all need a way to show our love for him.

Goddard was involved in only one off the field incident that I can remember, in which he came to the aid of a teammate who got jumped in a bar, where the Marshall team was celebating the end of fall workouts. The guy who instigated it was some guy from Ironton who walked on at Ohio State, who Marshall was about to play that year, and thought he'd crash the party and start a fight. He got his wish. At Marshall, Goddard grew as a student, a player, a father and as a man. He was a tribute to his parents and exlemplified the rewards of hard work and determination to reach your goals. He graduated, and set fantastic records his senior year, playing to his potential and becoming one of the best defensive ends in college football that year, and eventually getting to the NFL. Rest in peace, Jon. You will be missed, but not forgotten.

WOW! You people can be soooo cynical and hard-hearted! Yes, Goddard was an amazing player for Marshall, and for that he is dear to our hearts. No, he was not and exceptional role model in his days at Marshall (for any of you who remember the bar & beer bottle incident). That doesn't make this story any less tragic. Yes he was speeding, but who hasn't. The important thing to remember is that this was a tragic accident and a young life cut short. Put yourself in the position of his children, they have to grow up without a dad now. Stop your judging and just offer your sympathies. I can't believe the gull some of you have to trash talk the dead!!!

Posted by: Joanne on Jun 17, 2008 at 11:06 AM
Jon, you are a very callous, apathetic individual. The fact that you don't care doesn't mean that others share YOUR feelings. Mr. Goddard was a part of our community and regardless as to who's fault it was, it remains a somber event. I didn't know him but do send my condolences to his family because they are left to carry on without a husband, father & son. The only thing that can possibly come from this accident is the reinforcement of obeying the speed limit and driving defensively. This could easily have unfolded as being the result of a careless fellow driver. Point is an accident is an accident. No drugs or alcohol were involved. Show some class people. The man paid for his speeding with the ultimate penalty.

For those interested in sending flowers. The service will be held Thurs 2:00 Hardage Giddens 5753 Blanding Blvd Jacksonville Fl. 32244 Phone 904-777-5727 Johnathan was my sons inspiration in football. Johnathan meant the world to both my son and daughter. Jon would even take time out to watch my sons high school football games and give him pointers about everything from grades to plays. May God Bless the Goddards and keep them all close.

Posted by: P on Jun 17, 2008 at 10:06 AM
If anyone else asks, was drugs or alcohol involed I'm gonna scream. Look people a yong man lost his life, children lost a father a mother losat a son. Just pray for them!!!!

Posted by: Aussie on Jun 17, 2008 at 09:23 AM
I don't understand why you are getting so bent out of shape. Only one person asked about drugs and alcohol and I doubt that it was because of this athletic ability, race, religion or anything like that, people are just curious. I do not feel that it is nesseccarly anyone's business, however due to his football career, people are going to know him and are going to want to know what happened. There is nothing sick or twisted about that. I feel that it is pathetic that you must critcize these people, just send out your condolences and let it be, stop stiring in your own feces and move on with life.

May god bless him and his family it saddens me to see a young man have such a tragic accident and have some people ask some of the questions they ask

Posted by: yvonne on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:03 PM
if he had not played for mu, lots of us would not have known him, but that doesn't change the care factor. i hear about actors, athletes, singers, entertainers, etc. who have died in any kind of way and my heart goes out to them. so yes, I would have cared. i did know him and and i'm glad i did.

Posted by: Joyce on Jun 16, 2008 at 06:09 PM
My husband & I send our condolences to the Goddard family. We were lucky to meet him in person (he was my favorite player at Marshall that year) We have followed his career since he left Marshall. Our sympathy go out to you all, it sure is a loss also to us.

Posted by: true dat on Jun 16, 2008 at 03:54 PM
ARI, how is it your business exactly? Are you paying for the funeral or are you a relative? You need to provide some type of evidence to prove the validity of your claim otherwise it is none of your "buisness."

This is a very sad thing foor all of us. Imagine my surprise when I decided to check the news. Many prayers go to his family.

According to the Florida-Union newspaper; alcohol WAS NOT A FACTOR, speed and being thrown 80 ft.combined for the lose of life. What a hell of a defensive player he was; he would come after you like a Mack truck; he has now entered into the waiting arms of the Marshall Family Football members and family who have gone before him. Our thoughts and prayers will be with him and his family; may he rest in peace.

Posted by: steve on Jun 16, 2008 at 11:54 AM
all i can say is that god loves marshall football years ago he took the whole team and today he took another great football player from us you will be missed

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 16, 2008 at 11:21 AM
what I want to know is why would someone imeadiatly assume that it is drugs or alcohal...is it becasue of his age, race, or because he was an athlete. Maybe it was rain, or rocks, or a bad tire on the bike. Dont assume the worst.

Posted by: Cheyenne on Jun 16, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Former NFL Player Dies In Motorcycle Crash Goddard was airlifted to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 3am. Troopers said Goddard was wearing a helmet and alcohol was not a factor in the crash. News4Jax.com **HOW DARE ANY OF YOU ALL JUDGE HIM**

God bless the family. I know first hand what a painful loss it is to lose a brother. It stays with you always, but I know you will find a way to carry that in a possitive way. Love and Prayers from Johnathan's Marshall University Home Town!

TO THE PERSON ASKING IF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL WAS A FACTOR... IN THE FLORIDA PAPER IT CLEARLY STATES NO IT WAS NOT. SPEED WAS A FACTOR. JON LOVED FAST CARS, MOTORCYCLES AND BEING FAST TO SACK QUARTERBACKS! MY HEART IS BROKEN! JON WAS A VERY CLOSE FRIEND TO OUR FAMILY. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMETHING MISSING IN OUR LIFE.

Posted by: ARI on Jun 16, 2008 at 10:01 AM
