Reporter: The Associated Press

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (AP) - Pennsylvania native and Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) is among those who believe Portsmouth native and former Pittsburgh Pirates star Al Oliver should get a spot in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Kasich has sent a letter urging the hall to reconsider Oliver. The hall says the letter will be among materials available to the committees that consider candidates for induction.

Oliver tells the Portsmouth Daily Times (http://bit.ly/QpovoY ) he first met Kasich recently at a Habitat for Humanity house in southern Ohio. He says they talked about baseball and Kasich indicated he believes Oliver should be enshrined in the hall.

Oliver says he's pleased Kasich followed up by sending the letter.

Oliver appeared in seven All-Star games and won the batting title in 1982.
