For 19 years he was known as anchorman, dominating television news every evening on CBS.
The CBS Evening News would never be the same after his departure in 1981. The most trusted man in America stepped down after a long and illustrious career covering major world events, most notably John F. Kennedy's assassination, the Vietnam War and the moon landings.
He passed away July 17th of this year and was born on this day, 1916 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
