A lot of the frustration that led to our independence came from the British imposing taxes without colonists having a voice.
In the years before the Revolutionary War, there were a number of acts put in place. The Stamp Act and Tea Act were the ones that set the colonists over the top.
But as much as independent America hated taxes, they were inevitable.
In order to begin paying back the debt created by the Revolutionary War, America's newly formed government gave congress the power to tax in 1781 with the Articles of Confederation. The same held true when the Constitution became a reality.
And as frustrating as they were, the great Founding Fathers understood the necessity.
In fact one of the most famous quotes about taxes came in 1789 right after the Constitution was in place:
"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."
