College Football Takes Over Charleston Wednesday

Posted: Wed 12:08 PM, Aug 18, 2010

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The WVU-Marshall game isn't for a couple more weeks, but fans from both schools will be in Charleston Wednesday for a little pre-season fun.

Marshall University's annual "Paint the Capitol City Green" event is set for 6 p.m. at Embassy Suites. You must have a ticket to attend this event.

Fans will have the opportunity to meet the new head football coach and Hurricane native Doc Holliday and learn more about the university's new team.

"Paint the Capitol City Green" is nation's largest indoor pep rally for Thundering Herd alumni, fans and friends, according to the release. The rally will include appearances from Marco, the cheerleading squad and dance team.

The Herd's 2010 season opens on Thursday, September 2 against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.

Just down the street at the Charleston Civic Center, West Virginia University will kick off its Summer Blitz campaign in Charleston.

The Mountaineer Athletic Club is sponsoring events across the state welcoming Director of Athletics Oliver Luck back home to West Virginia.

The tour is also designed to officially kick off the athletic year.

Several Mountaineer coaches are expected to attend the event.

“The Mountaineer Athletic Club is excited to bring some of our greatest ambassadors from WVU to cities across West Virginia,” says assistant athletic director for athletic development, Niles Eggleston. “WVU has the greatest fans in the country, as well as some of the best student-athletes in the nation. We are excited to bring the two together, to give fans the opportunity to meet WVU coaches and former Mountaineer student-athletes, and to provide the opportunity for fans to learn more about helping the Mountaineers by joining the Mountaineer Athletic Club.”

The tour started on August 18 in New Martinsville and it will make nine stops before ending on August 20.

The event at the Charleston Civic Center starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Fans who need more information can call the Mountaineer Athletic Club at 800-433-2072.
