American Idol Winner to Headline Charleston Summertime Concert Series

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An American Idol winner is just one of several big names to headline Charleston's annual summertime concert series.

"Live on the Levee" is set to kick off its season on Memorial Day weekend at Haddad Riverfront Park.

At a news conference Monday, the city announced this year's lineup.

American Idol's Season 8 winner Kris Allen is set to take the stage on July 12. A fireworks show is also planned that night to celebrate the Clay Center's 10th anniversary.

Grammy winner and West Virginia native Kathey Mattea, legendary jazz drummer Butch Miles, pop singer Edwin McCain, The Campbell Brothers and the Boy Scout Jamboree Jazz Band are just some of the other headliners to take the stage during the free concert series this summer.

"What began as a nice addition to the night life options in Charleston has grown to become a real centerpeice of activities and other special events in this, our tenth season," Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said. "This summer, Moses Auto Group Live on the Levee concerts will be featured events during West Virginia's 150th birthday celebration, the Clay Center's 10th anniversary celebration, FestivALL Charleston, the Special Olympics Summer Games, Sports Fest weekend, the annual Biker Bash and our city's red carpet welcome for people going to the National Boy Scout Jamboree."

This is the 10th season for the free Friday night concerts which run from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

"After beginning 'Live on the Levee' in 2004 with a handful of Fridays, a wide concrete seating bowl, a temporary stage and a few vendors we had to entice to come down to the Boulevard, I am very pleased not only with how the event has grown, but also with how our riverfront has grown to make it even better," City Council President Tom Lane said. "This summer will be the fourth year on the Schoenbaum Stage and under the canopy, the third year for the Moses Auto Group and the first year with the brand new dock that will connect the concerts ever more powerfully to our boating community."

Lane was the person who first proposed the free weekly concert series ten years ago.

The first concert is set for Friday, May 24.
