CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Alpha Natural Resources has announced layoffs in several West Virginia counties.
Company officials notified 106 employees in Nicholas, Boone, Raleigh and Greenbrier counties that they are losing their jobs.
They say coal prices have dropped to new lows, which is forcing them to make the workforce reductions.
Alpha says they are also idling the Pocahontas mine in Greenbrier County and shutting down one section of the Grassy Creek Number 1 mine in Nicholas County.
Eighty-three workers are being offered positions at other mines.
