UPDATE 3/8/13 @ 6:30 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An early morning stabbing in Charleston is raising questions about escalating incidents of domestic abuse.
About 6:30 a.m. Friday, police responded to an apartment at 1600 Franklin Avenue where Drew Ornbaun was arrested. Drew had allegedly just stabbed his father, Thomas Ornbaun, in the neck.
Metro 911 reports show police have been dispatched to the unit more than a dozen times in the last five years.
At his arraignment Friday, Drew Ornbaun said he was being threatened by his family.
“My own brother tried to kill me,” he said.
Domestic violence counselor Elizabeth Crawford of the Domestic Violence Counseling Center said when incidents of violence go unchecked, sometimes the violence escalates.
“Many people think that domestic violence is something that happens between intimate partners, but domestic violence is also violence that occurs between people who are related by blood,” Crawford said.
Crawford said a healthy relationship between the abuser and the victim is possible after the act but it requires work from both parties.
“The victim needs trauma counseling,” she said. “For the person perpetrating the violence, they certainly need to learn different ways to deal with their anger.”
Drew is being charged with attempted murder. He remains in the South Central Regional Jail.
Thomas is being treated at CAMC hospital. He declined to comment.
It happened at an apartment building in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue about 6:30 a.m. Friday.
Police say Thomas and Drew Ornbaun got into a fight.
According to the criminal complaint, Drew told police he was tired of being threatened, so he walked out of his bedroom and stabbed Thomas in the neck.
Drew has been charged with attempted murder and is in the South Central Regional Jail.
The stabbed happened about 6:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 16-hundred block of Franklin Avenue.
Officers on the scene tell WSAZ.com this was a domestic situation between a father and son. Police say the son stabbed his father in the neck.
The father, Tom Ornbaun, has been taken to the hospital. No word yet on his condition.
His 24-year old son has been arrested. His name has not been released.
