UPDATE: Woman Arrested after Lockdown at Kanawha County School

UPDATE 12/4/12 @ 6 p.m.
CEDAR GROVE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One phone call turned into panic for Debra Shelton.

“She said everything was OK, but that's all she would tell me,” Shelton said. “She wouldn't tell me if the kids in the class were OK.”

Shelton's granddaughter attends Cedar Grove Elementary. Tuesday morning, she got a call telling her the school was on lockdown after the aunt of two students called and said their mother was on the way to the school with a gun.

“My concern was, you know, the children,” Shelton said. “And how can this happen? We're supposed to have better security in our schools.”

Shelton rushed to the school to make sure her granddaughter would be OK. Other parents, including Glenda Mace, did the same.

“I was terrified,” Mace said. “You know, my kids go here. So I was terrified actually.”

After being on lockdown for more than an hour, the alert was lifted. The parent in question never showed up. State Police say she is the suspect in a gun theft that happened Tuesday morning in Charleston. But there's no confirmation she made any threats involving that gun and the school.

“Right now nobody can give us information that (the suspect) actually made that statement other than through a third party,” West Virginia State Police Cpl. J.D. Perry said.

Two state troopers spent the day at the school to ease parents’ minds and make sure everyone was safe.

“Is there any reason that the public should be concerned for safety right now?” WSAZ.com’s Lauren Schmoll asked.

“No, not that I'm aware of,” Perry said.

Still, Shelton's mind is not yet at ease.

“It's concerning for all the children,” she said. “Not just my grandchildren.”

The mother -- who, again, was arrested Tuesday afternoon -- also was arrested Monday for shoplifting in Kanawha County.

State Police say she'd just gotten out of jail hours before that alleged gun theft Tuesday morning.
