UPDATE 7/16/12 @ 11:15 p.m.
MARMET, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man hit and killed by a train Monday afternoon was accompanied by a stranger who tried to save his life -- but couldn't do it in time.
Jonathan Johnson said he was with the victim when it happened about 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ohio Avenue and 98th Street.
"It's scary to even walk on the side of the tracks when there's a tunnel there ... because they go real fast," he said.
Johnson said he had just met the victim that day -- moments before his life was taken by the train. He said he saw the train coming and tried to get it to stop -- but couldn't succeed.
"I went out there and tried to flag him down," Johnson said. "But the driver didn't see us ... and the train hit him."
He said he even tried to pull the victim off of the tracks, but he wouldn't cooperate.
Police initially thought they had identified the victim but then became unsure of the identity.
