UPDATE 7/12/12 @ 5:30 p.m.
RAND, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An arrest and murder charge after a deadly shooting in Rand, and this man, Brent Burdette, accused of being behind it all.

"Mr. Burdette, what you've been charged with is first degree murder. Do you understand that sir," asks a Kanawha County Magistrate. "Yeah," replied Burdette.

"And if you're found guilty of that charge it's a life sentence in the penitentiary. Do you understand that?" "Yeah," Burdette said.

A serious sentence for a serious crime.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said Burdette shot William Cordle II once in the chest. The reason? According to witnesses, Burdette told them Cordle was "running his mouth."

Sandra Calloway said she heard the gunshot but wasn't prepared for what she saw next.

"The young man he was actually laid up against the fence and somebody came and took and pulled his feet and that's the image I'll keep seeing," Calloway said. "Just his lifeless body being pulled away from the fence."

Calloway said the shooting is upsetting because her kids are about the same age as the victim and suspect. She said she didn't want to believe what she heard, Thursday morning.

"I actually got really scared because I knew what it was," she said. "I didn't want to believe what it was but I knew what it was and I definitely didn't want to look out the door and see a young man who could potentially have a vibrant life laying lifelessly across the street."

Now, two families are left grieving and Calloway says two young men have lost their lives.

"One will probably spend most of his life in jail and unfortunately the other one will be buried a few days later so it's a no win situation," she said.

Wsaz.com talked to Burdette's family, Thursday morning. They didn't want to go on camera but said they're truly sorry for Cordle's family.

Burdette's preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 20 at 1:30 p.m. He's being held in the South Central Regional Jail. No bond's been set.
