WINFIELD, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A thief who stole from a volunteer fire department in Putnam County could be putting lives in danger.
Winfield Police tell WSAZ.com that a battery was stolen from one of the rescue boats at the Winfield Volunteer Fire Department.
The boat was moved out of storage about 6 p.m. Saturday but by 9 p.m. the battery was missing, according to firefighters.
The battery is only valued at about $250, however, firefighters don't understand why someone would steal a part of a tool meant for saving lives.
"It's an issue for us because you never know when you're going to need that boat," Officer Kevin Young said. "If someone were to drown or something in one of these rivers around here and they needed Winfield Fire Department's assistance, they wouldn't be able to help."
Police do not have any suspects. They are still investigating. If you have any information, call police at 304-586-9200.
