PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For the last time ever, the Buffalo High School basketball team played at "The Barn." The community staple is soon to be a thing of the past, and the games will be played in a bigger space.
"I've been here every week for 34 years," said basketball Coach Chuck Elkins. "And this building has been my life for 34 years, and it's really hard to see it go."
For Elkins, it's the end of an era.
"It's just a wealth of memories that I could probably write a book about it if I ever wanted to sit down and do it," Elkins said.
Hundreds gathered Friday night to share in the final game played on the court in Buffalo simply called "The Barn."
"We've done a lot of work here and grown up here and it's definitely something very memorable for me and it's going to be really hard to say goodbye to," said Lindsay Elkins, a 2004 graduate of Buffalo High School.
They included a man who played the first game ever in this gym back in 1951.
"It was a new building then and we were just tickled to death to play in this building," said Johnny Harris. "So I thought I'd come tonight and see if they'd let me play in the last one."
Indeed, there is a lot of history and pride in the small gym.
"I just love how our fans go crazy about everything and they have our backs and it's small," said senior basketball player, Alex Ferrari. "It's a great place to play."
It was a fond farewell as they get ready to enter a new chapter in a much bigger space -- hoping to score more memories for the next generation.
Elkins said he believes the Board of Education will remodel the entire building and turn it into an elementary school. The new high school will be ready by fall.
