PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Business is booming in Putnam County, with a number of places setting up shop just within the past month.
“I can remember when Putnam County up in the valley was nothing but a cornfield,” Putnam County resident Kim Sayre said.
Sayre spent years watching the county grow. Part of the most recent business boom includes a 24-hour gym, Snap Fitness, in Winfield.
“When we saw it being built, my husband and I were very excited,” Sayre said.
Opening only one month ago, it has already acquired more than 500 members.
“We definitely hit a homerun with our location and with the demographics we were looking for,” Chris Rotella, with Snap Fitness, said.
Attached to the gym is another new business, Generations Physical Therapy.
Some other new businesses in Putnam County include a Food King grocery store that’s also in Winfield, a new pawn shop and car wash in Hurricane, and there's also a new Mattress Warehouse being built in Teays Valley.
Factory Connection is also opening at Liberty Square Shopping Center. It offers name brand clothing, shoes and accessories for 20 to 50 percent off other store's prices.
Along with other shops, a Little Caesars will be part of a new strip mall being built in Teays Valley.
“You've gotta have businesses,” County Commissioner Joe Haynes said. “That's the lifeblood of any community.”
Haynes says a lot of Putnam County’s recent development has to do with the budget.
“We don't think that raising taxes is the way you attract businesses,” Haynes said.
“Each thing that comes in, it's nicer because you don't have to go to Charleston or Huntington to go to a restaurant or shop or do things like that,” Sayre said.
