CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Leaders call it a golden opportunity for the city.

Construction plans are progressing for a new Marriott hotel along Kanawha Boulevard. But building commissioners don't want the excitement to stop there.

They want to add retail stores to the mix with an outdoor, courtyard-style shopping center.

"It's going to bring in a lot of people to Charleston and be something there for people to do and see," said Tony Harmon with the Charleston Building Commission.

The plan is still in the early stages. City leaders aren't sure what retail shops would be there yet. But they say the shops would be next to the hotel on a lower level by the Elk River.

Harmon says a new boardwalk would add to the atmosphere.

"The boardwalk would be a way to get from one place to the other along the river," Harmon said.

Holiday shoppers in Charleston were already excited about the prospect of new stores.

"I'm intrigued to see what there would be for lunch options and shopping," Erin McCoy said. "Places where you can just walk around."

Harmon says it all would come together in the next five to six years.

He says the Marriott will have the final say about the construction.
