KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Child Protective Services worker has been arrested in Charleston and charged with sexual assault by a custodian.

Kara Brumley, 32, of Pinch, was arrested Thursday afternoon.

She is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy. She was the case worker for the boy at the time of the alleged assault.

Brumley was arraigned Thursday and is being held on $100,000 bond. She is being taken to the South Central Regional Jail.

For Brumley's neighbors, the news is incredibly shocking.

"It's terrible," says neighbor Jay McDaniel. "I don't know what to think. If it can happen here, it can happen anywhere."

They say it also casts light on the system.

"She's got access to these kids," said McDaniel, "and as parents, we trust these people that are in these positions. We have to."

Other neighbors, however, said it's a sad situation for a faithful worker.

"There's just nothing I can say against her," said neighbor Ellen Asbury. "Wonderful mother. Wonderful parents."

The Department of Health and Human Resources released the following statement Thursday: "DHHR is fully cooperating with the police investigation related to the arrest of CPS Worker Kara Brumley and will be conducting its own internal investigation. It's very unfortunate that the alleged actions of one employee can cast a dark shadow over the important work that DHHR does every day to help protect the safety and well-being of our children."
