CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man who admitted to our cameras, he snatched an elderly woman's keys and then took off in her car, is now changing his tune.

Brent Prouse was expected to be plead guilty Wednesday morning to second degree robbery. Then, at the last minute he turned the deal down.

Charleston Police say Prouse stole Mildred Carper's car from the parking garage at CAMC General earlier this month.

As part of the deal, prosecutors were going to drop three unrelated charges against him. That offer is no longer on the table.

Prouse also asked for his bail to be lowered, but the judge denied that request.

ORIGINAL STORY
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police have arrested a man in connection with a carjacking involving an elderly woman.

Detectives tell WSAZ.com Brent Prouse, 24, of St. Albans was caught late Tuesday afternoon after they received several tips, including some from his family.

Police say Prouse was wanted for allegedly stealing Mildred Carper's car after her keys were snatched from her hands.

"The first thought I had was this is my car, he can't do this," Carper said.

It happened Friday on the third floor of the parking garage at CAMC General.

Police say Prouse got into the victim's blue 2002 Jeep Liberty and drove off.

"He had turned like he was going to get in the car and then he turned back and said, 'You got money?' And I said, no, and he said, 'Give me that purse,' and I clutched my purse to me," Carper said.

The SUV has since been recovered.

"I guess he saw a little old grey-haired lady and thought, you know that would be easy to do," she said.

Surveillance video was released by detectives and WSAZ aired the video showing a man prowling and stealing. Since then, police say tips have helped identify Prouse.

Prouse was picked up in St. Albans. He will be charged with grand larceny.

Carper said this whole incident has taken away her sense of security.

"You expect to be able to walk down the street or into a parking building or anywhere and be safe," she said. "I'll never have that feeling again."
