Police Say Recent Kanawha City Violence Is Just Coincidence

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Two violent crimes, within miles, and only three days apart. A murder and then a robbery at a video lottery store have some on edge.

Charleston Police Department Lt. Steve Cooper says, "Anytime there's a robbery and they're forceful during the commission of that robbery, it really heightens the awareness and when there's a weapon involved."

The two cases of extreme violence in Kanawha City are just seven days into the new year, but city leaders say they're not worried. It's just coincidence.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones says, "I would not overly concern myself. Kanawha City isn't under siege. These are isolated incidents."

Cooper adds, "These things occur. You can't exactly predict the date and time they're going to happen. It just so happens these occurred closely together."
