CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Fire Department officials say a national EMT shortage is hitting home. They're looking for qualified paramedics to join their team and help save lives.

Officials are launching a hiring campaign to spread the word and seek out qualified candidates. Along with being EMT certified, they say applicants have to be between the ages of 18 and 36.

They also have to pass a written test and a physical endurance exam. But officials say that's only part of the picture.

"We need someone with good people skills," EMS operations director Robert Sloan said. "Someone who can sit and talk to a person who needs to be talked to [along] with someone who has the medical knowledge to make a difference in someone's life."

Thomas Robinson was recently hired and is still going through the training process.

"We've gone through a lot of fire and rescue training, and they've been very knowledgeable in helping us out," Robinson said.

If you're interested, officials say you can pick up an application at any of the Charleston fire stations.
