CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The first big step was taken Monday night for the city's plan to expand and renovate the Civic Center.
At a city council meeting, members approved an agreement to hire the firm O'Dell Associates Inc. for design consulting services.
The new agreement means O'Dell will help city council find a company to renovate the Civic Center.
City organizers say right now this is the biggest issue on their agenda.
"We have a need for convention facilities. We have a need for a ballroom. So for the past couple of years, it has been one of the major goals that this city has defined that it wants to accomplish," city council president Tom Lane said.
Council is budgeting the project at $50,000,000. That money will primarily come from the new half-cent sales tax put in place last year.
