NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A city's long-term improvement plan is on the fast track, and neighbors say they're noticing.
Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt has only been in office for about four months. However, he's pushed a 20-year master plan into motion, with many city areas taking shape.
"I have a list up here on the board of what I would like to have done by the end of the year," Casebolt said. "I see a lot of opportunities."
City Council has spent the last couple of years working on the plan for the city. Casebolt attributes the plan to a large group of city officials, community members and companies.
At the lake in Nitro, a new gazebo has been constructed along with a large cement slab where 100 chairs can be set up for events.
Casebolt says there already are two to three wedding scheduled every weekend.
Grants are helping fund a cleanup and improvement effort. There is space that's been cleared at near the lake for a fourth picnic shelter. Also, grant money will fund an improved hiking trail and has already made an archery range possible.
"It is a wonderful place just to come out and relax," Casebolt said.
"Improvements they've made so far make it more beautiful and a better lake," neighbor Carla Dunlap said.
Longtime neighbors, like Carla Dunlap are taking advantage of what she says was once dirty and underutilized.
However, now improvements mean free WiFi, a lake stocked six times a year and council approving plans for a new dog park.
At the city's park, there are upgrades planned to serve kids and families. Soon one soccer and practice football field will have lighting added.
Officials also have to fix a growing problem near the riverbank, which is experiencing major slipping. Casebolt says it threatens the power lines, but City Council hopes the solution will also result in a future riverfront park.
Nearby, phase one of a street scape project has already been finished, making the city more accessible and identifiable.
The mayor says the dog park should be completed in the next month. City Council hopes more grants will help fund other parts of the 20-year master plan for Nitro.
