UPDATE 6/17/14 @ 9:30 p.m.
DUNBAR, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Rescue crews had originally planned to resume their search for a missing swimmer Tuesday evening, but officials say the plan now is to wait and see if the body surfaces.

South Charleston Fire Department Assistant Chief Virgil White said they have received conflicting accounts from witnesses about where the man went in the water, influencing the decision.

Police tell WSAZ.com a person who lives near the river saw a man in his 20s jump into the river near the Dunbar Toll Bridge and start swimming across the river from Dunbar to South Charleston. The man got about halfway across the river when the witness says he went under and never resurfaced.

After about four hours of searching, rescue crews halted their operation. White said originally they’d considered resuming later in the evening, but decided against it after police informed them of the conflicting accounts of where the swimmer went in.

WSAZ.com Chief Meteorologist Tony Cavalier said river levels are at or slightly below the normal current because of the dry weather, but the Kanawha is a deep river and has a lot of whirlpools that can make it trying to get across dangerous, even for experienced swimmers.
