Election Officials Expect Low Turnout in W.Va. Governor's Race
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Election officials may expect low turnout in West Virginia's primary race for governor, but the candidates have collected more than 8,700 contributions totaling nearly $4.5 million.
About half those were received during the final reporting period before Saturday's vote. The overall figures show the Democratic field has attracted 90 percent of the funds raised.
The race features a number of candidates with experience in state-level elected politics. Four are current or former statewide officeholders, including three of the six Democrats. That field also features the top leaders of both the state Senate and House of Delegates.
In 2004, six Democrats and eight Republicans also ran. Just one was a state-level veteran: then-Secretary of State Joe Manchin, the eventual victor. Led by Manchin, those candidates raised $3.5 million before that primary.
