UPDATE 1/2/14 @ 5:00 p.m.
BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Black ice stopped several school buses in their tracks Thursday morning in Boone County.

School officials tell WSAZ.com the drivers determined it was too dangerous en route. They had to pull over with some elementary students already in tow.

"There were a handful of students that had been picked up, so that just kind of heightened the sense of safety," Assistant Superintendent Jeff Huffman said.

At that point, Huffman says school officials made the decision to cancel elementary classes. Bus drivers waited till roads were clear to bring the students back home.

Middle and high school students are brought to school earlier and were already in class when the weather hit. They were dismissed an hour early.

"I've been in the business about 27 years, and this is the first time I've encountered this type of thing that would happen so quickly and shut down the buses," Huffman said.

He says school officials work with the Department of Highways to decide when canceling school is appropriate.

Bus drivers reported seeing the worst weather conditions in rural parts of the county.
